One of the biggest problems facing the young people of Zambia today is
youth unemployment. There are a number and masses of young people that have
good qualification but do not have a job. There are just no jobs for them. It
always pains them if they are heading a family or taking care of their fellow
brothers and sisters. A lot of young people have blamed the government for the
poor educational and employment policies despite having the ministries of
education, Ministry of Youth and Sports, and The Ministry of Labour. This
disparity has increased the number of street vendors (who are mainly the
youths) in the communities and towns. This is for the reason that they want to
at least find something to get home so that they feed the ones they are taking
care of. It is so unfortunate because even the university graduates can still
hover around the communities. In this paper, I discuss ways in which this
problem of unemployment can be solved.
Youth unemployment can be solved by opening up skill training center in all
districts of Zambia, which shall offer skills such as tailoring, carpentry
computer training, home management, brick laying and power electrical. This
skill training should be able to accommodate all unemployed youths with at
least something to do and at the end of the day, one will have pocket money.
Government has no capacity to employ everyone in the country ,but it has
the potential to create an enabling environment for opportunities For instance,
Government can open up Youth Banks in all districts of Zambia that can offer
soft loans for business to all those who graduates from skill training center.
They should be clubs in schools and communities that
should introduce entrepreneurship concepts and terms. They should lay the
foundation of what entrepreneurship involves and some financial knowledge
basics. These clubs are meant to be interactive as much as possible and it
would be required to have exchange visits with other schools to learn from each
other. Emphasis should be on entrepreneurship rather than on white collar jobs
rather than waiting for the Government to employ them.
The Government should also make sure that any
investor who is coming employs a good number of Zambian scholars. On the other
hand tender jobs should be given to Zambian companies before bringing Chinese
and other foreign investors.
There are number of Jobs that the Government has
given to foreign investors. This should be the old concept of development.
Development should start by encouraging Zambian companies to develop its
country by employing local resources. In Zambia we have all it takes to have
strong economy in the world. All we need is for the Government to create this
opportunity for everyone.
In conclusion, unemployment situation in Zambia
calls for more visionaries to translate these challenges into creativity. It is
a issue that should involve all stakeholders, the government, private sector,
churches and traditional leaders. The role of the Government is to create an
enabling environment for private and public partnership and encourage
indigenous Zambians to access land and financing.
Youth unemployment in Zambia is a national crisis
that needs immediate attention. The time is now to transform the unemployment
dilemma the youth way. We the youth have to take the reins in our hands and
choose to do something about our situation rather than waiting for others to do
something for us. Unless the youth work together and remain determined to do
something about the unemployment crisis, it will simply remain a discussion discussed
over and over. We have the potential and ability to change our communities,
nation and world, not tomorrow, but today!
